Customer ServiceIf you find a failed capacitor on your motherboard, you can either replace the capacitor or replace the motherboard. If your computer is still operable, be sure to backup your data before attempting to replace a capacitor or the motherboard.
Customer ServiceThe swelling of capacitors on a motherboard can have multiple causes, for example: one of the main causes being the aging of the components. Over time, capacitors can deteriorate due to factors such as high temperatures, voltage variations, or even faulty design. In fact, manufacturing defects are uncommon, and the incorrect installation of a capacitor is rare,
Customer ServiceMotherboard capacitors are small, cylindrical components that are scattered throughout the motherboard. They are typically made of a ceramic or electrolytic material and are used to filter, regulate, and store electrical energy. Capacitors are an essential part of any electronic circuit, and in the context of a motherboard, they play a critical role in maintaining

Customer ServiceElectrolytic or motherboard capacitors are small, cylindrical (drum-like) objects installed near a power circuit. A capacitor can store an electrical charge that the board can use to help reduce voltage fluctuations. Capacitors are similar to batteries in that they can store potential energy.
Customer ServiceTo determine if a motherboard capacitor is bad: Look for physical signs: Inspect the capacitor for bulging, leaking, or burnt marks, which are common indicators of failure. Use a multimeter or ESR meter: Check the capacitance and ESR of the capacitor. A significantly lower capacitance or higher ESR than the rated values indicates a failure.

Customer ServiceIn layman’s terms, a capacitor is a tiny electrical component soldered to the motherboard. Capacitors perform a couple of different functions. First, a capacitor conditions DC voltage to other components (e.g. the video card, hard drive, sound card etc) as a way to provide a steady stream of power.
If your computer is still operable, be sure to backup your data before attempting to replace a capacitor or the motherboard. To replace a faulty capacitor, you will need some soldering experience and equipment. To replace a failed capacitor, use this guide for recapping your own motherboard or device.
Each capacitor is attached to a motherboard very precisely, using solder. When you replace one, the same precision must be used, or you risk permanent damage to your machine. The first step in the repair process is to identify the capacitor that needs to be replaced. Usually, a bad capacitor has some manner of bulge on the top of it.
A motherboard will only function properly without capacitors if the missing ones are for a component you’re not using on your system. There’s nothing that draws power to it, and there’s nothing to regulate, allowing the motherboard to still work properly.
The capacitors junction point is on the bottom of the motherboard, so it needs to be removed to access the underside. Using your soldering iron, heat the existing solder at the junction point for each (usually two total) leg of the capacitor. Then, gently pull the capacitor away from that leg on the top side of the motherboard.
To install the new capacitors you’ll have to open up the holes in the motherboard, which most likely still have solder in them. The most common method for this is using a solder sucker. Simply heat up the solder, hold the tip of the sucker near and push the trigger. However, with old, sluggish solder, this often doesn’t work as desired.
