With a burgeoning demand for PV systems on the horizon, there is an urgent need to reassess past policies and chart new directions.
Customer ServiceIn China, renewable energy includes hydropower, solar PV, solar thermal, concentrating solar, wind energy, bioenergy, geothermal, and tidal or marine energy. In the power sector, China generally distinguishes between hydropower and non-hydro renewable energy, which typically equates to "new energy."
Customer ServiceChina is the world''s leader in wind and solar power, although new capacity is being added more slowly than several years ago. Meanwhile, a wave of coal power plant approvals and fewer public mentions of urban air pollution and climate change have raised questions about the future of China''s renewable power sector in the wake of Covid-19. Customer ServiceMost of China''s solar power is generated within its western provinces and is transferred to other regions of the country. In 2011, China owned the largest solar power plant in the world at the time, the Huanghe Hydropower Golmud Solar Park, which had a photovoltaic capacity of 200 MW.
Customer ServiceAs the world''s largest carbon emitter, China has pledged to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. An essential pathway to the carbon neutrality goal is to promote the replacement of coal-fired power generation with low or zero-carbon energy sources [1], [2].Solar power, especially solar photovoltaic (PV), will be one of the main energy sources in the future
Customer ServiceOver recent decades, China has risen to a preeminent global position in both solar photovoltaic (PV) adoption and production, a feat underpinned by a suite of pivotal policy measures. With a burgeoning demand for PV systems on the horizon, there is an urgent need to reassess past policies and chart new directions.
However, based on the limited studies on China’s solar PV policies, the literature only lists China’s existing PV solar policies , , which cannot explain the dynamic trajectory of Chinese solar policy and its relation to the development of the industry.
China is a quick policy learner that can follow the international policy experience and import them to China. However, Chinese PV solar policy is lack of strategic policy research. For example, the policies that had been launched were mostly made without the guidance of national energy portfolio strategy.
The government incentives have also contributed to the curtailment of solar energy, as many of the solar projects have been built in northern and western regions of China where there is a low demand for electricity and a lack of infrastructure to transfer energy towards China's main power grid.
In the first nine months of 2017, China saw 43 GW of solar energy installed in the first nine months of the year and saw a total of 52.8 GW of solar energy installed for the entire year. 2017 is currently the year with the largest addition of solar energy capacity in China.
As of at least 2024, China has one third of the world's installed solar panel capacity. Most of China's solar power is generated within its western provinces and is transferred to other regions of the country.
