Despite the success of this project, and the fact that Argentina is considered an ideal location for PV development, the country produces almost none of its energy from PV. The energy mix from 2019 showed that Argentina used 89% fossil fuels, 3.9% hydroelectric, 2.8% nuclear, and the remaining encompassed all other sources of energy creation.
The electricity from the Cauchari solar project will be sold to Argentina’s electricity wholesale market administrator Compañía Administradora del Mercado Mayorista Eléctrico (CAMMESA) at a price of £46 per MWh under a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA).
Although lagging much behind its neighbouring countries of Brazil and Chile, Argentina has slowly increased its activity in the solar industry, with an increasing number of projects being unveiled in the past 12 months.
With a new expansion, it will be able to provide electricity to 260,000 homes while also creating new jobs for local Argentinians. The Cauchari Solar Plant is just the start for Argentina, which is starting to really shift to using more renewable energy sources.
Argentina reached a cumulative installed PV capacity of 1,366 MW at the end of December 2023. The country added around 262 MW of new solar in 2023. Developers installed 33 MW of new PV capacity in 2022, compared to around 300 MW in 2021. This content is protected by copyright and may not be reused.
