BRUSSELS, May 13 (Reuters) - The European Commission will close its investigation into Chinese bidders in a public tender for a solar park in Romania after the companies withdrew from the process, European Industry Commission Thierry Breton said on Monday.
Two Chinese bidders have pulled out of a tender to supply a solar park in Romania, the latest sign that the EU’s new anti-subsidy powers are having a deterrent effect on companies that Brussels claims receive financial support from Beijing.
The two solar consortiums that dropped out of Romania are a German subsidiary of Longi Green Energy Technology, one of the world’s largest makers of photovoltaic cells and solar panels, and two European subsidiaries of the Chinese state-backed power company Shanghai Electric.
But the China Chamber of Commerce to the EU slammed the rules "as a tool of economic coercion" which left the Chinese companies with "no commercially prudent options but to withdraw". The CCCEU claimed the Chinese companies faced more scrutiny than other non-EU firms, and said the withdrawal "hampers" the EU's "green transformation efforts".
