In constant voltage (CV) charging process, the battery string voltage is reached to V c v and the charging current is reduced to a preset value. During this process, the balancing circuit gradually equalizes the batteries voltages and prevents any imbalances in the battery string.
The proposed self-balanced charger is shown in Fig. 2. The charger employs the PSFB converter with a current doubler rectifier to reduce the secondary winding current rating approximately to half of the output current value. Also, as a well-known subject, the output capacitances and inductances are small in this configuration.
High power battery packs consisting of a large number of battery cells require extensive management, such as State of Charge (SOC) balancing and thermal management, in order to keep the operating conditions within a safe and efficient range.
The balancing circuit only charges the batteries with the lowest voltages values during its positive half cycle, initially. Also, this current discharges only the batteries with the highest voltages values during its negative half cycle and their extra charges are transferred to the resonant tank of the balancing circuit, properly.
